Sodium chloride or salt brine (NaCl2) is common table salt. As a pre-wet/de-icer it is combined with water to produce a brine. Street crews currently produce all brine used within the city, with the capacity to produce 5,000 gallons per hour. The brine maker is controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). The PLC initiates the dilution process while a second sensor re-checks concentration and accepts or rejects the batch. Prior to an event, 10,000 gallons of brine is stockpiled at the Public Works Facility.
